Background of Mindfulness (MBSR)

Mindfulness is fundamental to many traditional meditative practices and is non-sectarian in nature.

In 1979 Jon Kabat-Zinn, the founder of the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, gathered and adapted ancient Buddhist teachings to develop a stress-reduction program designed to help people relieve suffering. Since its inception, thousands of people have completed the eight-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program and learned how to use their innate resources and abilities to respond more effectively to stress, pain, and illness. This program has been successfully implemented in hundreds of hospitals, clinics, health centers and other settings around the world helping people with conditions as diverse as chronic pain, heart disease, anxiety, psoriasis, sleep problems and depression.
